The top cherry producing nation is Turkey.
In the UK the cherry growing season is very short and is at its peak in mid-July
Organised Cherry orchards did not arrive in Britain until the Tudor times
There are more than 1,000 different varieties of cherry.
Despite their popularity the British cherry is under threat. In the In the last 50 years we’ve lost 90% of our Cherry orchards and now import around 95% of the Cherries we eat. In the UK, we spend £60 million a year on cherries.
